Impact of Mg <scp>ii</scp> interstellar medium absorption on near-ultraviolet exoplanet transit measurements

چکیده
Ultraviolet (UV) transmission spectroscopy probes atmospheric escape, which has a significant impact on planetary evolution. If unaccounted for, interstellar medium absorption (ISM) at the position of specific UV lines might bias transit depth measurements, and thus potentially affect (non-)detection features in spectra. Ultimately, this is connected to so called ``resolution-linked bias'' (RLB) effect. We present parametric study quantifying unresolved or unconsidered ISM measurements MgII h&k resonance (i.e. 2802.705 {\AA} 2795.528 respectively) near-ultraviolet spectral range. consider main-sequence stars different types vary shape amount chromospheric emission, absorption, as well their relative velocities. also evaluate role played by integration bin resolution. an open-source tool enabling one quantify measurements. further apply few already soon be observed systems. On average, we find that ignoring leads biases comparable uncertainties obtained from observations published date. However, considering induced become necessary when analysing with next generation space telescopes coverage (e.g. LUVOIR, HABEX), will provide spectra significantly smaller compared what current facilities HST).

Near-infrared Transit Photometry of the Exoplanet Hd 149026b
The transiting exoplanet HD 149026b is an important case for theories of planet formation and planetary structure, because the planet’s relatively small size has been interpreted as evidence for a highly metal-enriched composition. We present observations of 4 transits with the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer on the Hubble Space Telescope within a wavelength range of 1.1–2.0 ...
متن کاملOn the Absorption of X-rays in the Interstellar Medium
We present an improved model for the absorption of X-rays in the interstellar medium (ISM) intended for use with data from future X-ray missions with larger effective areas and increased energy resolution such as Chandra and the X-ray Multiple Mirror mission, in the energy range & 100 eV. Compared to previous work, our formalism includes recent updates to the photoionization cross section and r...
متن کاملJovian Atmosphere: Near-Ultraviolet Absorption
Greenspan and Owen (1), in a stimulating discussion of the Jovian atmosphere, have reconsidered Stecher's (2) rocket ultraviolet spectroscopy of Jupiter. They conclude that, while the general reflectivity between 2000 and 3000 A can be matched by some 12 km-atm of H2 and a small surface reflectivity, there still exist two significant absorption features in this wavelength range. This residual a...
متن کاملExoplanet Transit Parallax
The timing and duration of exoplanet transits has a dependency on observer position due to parallax. In the case of an Earth-bound observer with a 2 AU baseline the dependency is typically small and slightly beyond the limits of current timing precision capabilities. However, it can become an important systematic effect in high-precision repeated transit measurements for long period systems due...
متن کاملFar Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer Measurements of Interstellar Fluorine
The source of fluorine is not well understood, although core-collapse supernovae, Wolf-Rayet stars, and asymptotic giant branch stars have been suggested. A search for evidence of the -process during Type II supernovae is presented. Absorption from interstellar F i is seen in spectra of HD 208440 and HD 209339A acquired with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. In order to extract the co...
